Community is important

Hey!👋 Craig here—

We should be social. It’s in our nature, and to deny social growth is unhealthy.

It seems these days, the world is getting more and more disconnected, and it’s hurting our mental health! One of the questions I’m frequently asked by my students is, “Where do I go to meet people?”

Now, if you’re smooth and you’ve got the skills, you can meet people anywhere… But I get it.. If you haven’t practiced the skills enough— If you don’t feel comfortable cold approaching a stranger, WHERE do you meet others?

If you’ve been around TikTok, you might have heard of the Third Space Problem. A third space is a place where people can meet and hang out that isn’t home or work (also extends to school). The problem is that these days third spaces are getting expensive, going out of business, and getting knocked down and replaced with a luxury high-rise. 🙄

People have been flocking to virtual third spaces for years now. Social media comments sections come to mind, and in the past decade we've found the rise of streaming, Discord communities, and Zoom support groups. I've always been apprehensive about the reliance of these spaces as a replacement for in-person communities, circles, and relationships. As a community organizer for multiple in-person, online, and hybrid communities— from college clubs to meetup groups and special interest communities like at Jaunty— I’ve come to accept that it’s unavoidable, and that an effective community can leverage these online tools for deeper communication. However, I do caution that a full reliance on an online third space cannot fulfill everything that is needed for an individual, and we must work to create a world where there is access to the joy of the in-person community and interactions.

This being said, I’ve been asked by multiple TikTok followers (My homies- IYKYK) repeatedly to create a Discord server. (If you don’t know, Discord is a chat and voice app used by gamers and communities. For my corporate business people, it’s like Slack, but doesn’t give you as much anxiety when you hear that you got a message.) I hesistated to make one, and in my hesitation, I couldn’t really visualize what I could be doing with a Discord community right now.

But now I have a better idea. My end goal is to do what I can to help end social disconnection for as many people as possible. Sometimes I don’t know how I’ll squeeze in this social media stuff because I get bogged down with the stress of life responsibilities— believe it or not, the social skills business was negatively impacted by the pandemic for a few years, and I’m still recovering. And I’ve come to a resolution that I need to build a community online in order to help my business (and my life) grow in a sustainable way. In doing so, I hope to develop more 2-WAY COMMUNICATION WITH YOU and create a space where like minds can grow together.

I look at it like this email is great for announcements and some formal communication, and Discord can be something a little more interactive, where you can get your questions answered, and be more engaged with each other

That said, if you’re interested in being part of a community that believes that:
We should be social. It’s in our nature, and to deny social growth is unhealthy.
Human connection is less and less prioritized these days, and change needs to be made in order to build a better future for our communities, our businesses, our families, and ourselves.

Because at the end of the day, all we really have is each other.

I would like to invite you to my Discord Server, where I plan to answer your questions about social intelligence, give you a platform to meet others, and hopefully post some cool exclusive content related to social skills, charisma, leadership, and relationships.

Craig
